In 2025, a single breach exposed more than sixteen billion usernames and passwords. It was the largest credential leak in history and compromised nearly half of all online accounts across the world.
“Every major breach proves the same point: if your secrets live in the cloud, they’re not really yours.”
— Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether
Why did it happen? Because we still store our most sensitive data in the cloud. And the cloud is not safe.
PearPass is here to change that.
Developed by Tether Data, PearPass is a fully local and open source password manager that keeps your data on your own devices where it belongs. It is private by design and resilient by default. PearPass is powered by the Pear stack, the same peer to peer technology that underpins applications like Keet and enables apps to run without relying on any centralized infrastructure.
There is no cloud. No corporate vault. No external infrastructure. Your passwords remain encrypted on your own devices with optional peer to peer syncing when needed. You stay in full control.
Why Build Another Password Manager?
Most password managers today are designed with a cloud first approach. They store your entire vault of passwords along with other sensitive data like login history and autofill preferences on centralized servers.
That turns them into high value targets and single points of failure. If the server goes down, you lose access. If the server is compromised, your data becomes someone else’s problem.
PearPass removes this risk completely. By eliminating servers, it eliminates the biggest attack surface. There is no vault to breach if there is no vault outside your device.
“If there is no server, there is nothing to hack.”
— Mathias Buus, CEO of Holepunch
What Makes PearPass Different?
PearPass stores your passwords only on your devices. When you want to sync across multiple devices, it uses encrypted peer to peer connections to transfer data directly. Nothing is uploaded or stored externally. Nothing touches third party infrastructure.
The app is fully open source and has been audited by Secfault Security, a leading firm in offensive security and cryptographic analysis. PearPass works entirely offline, so your passwords are always accessible even without an internet connection.
The interface is simple and intuitive. You can generate, save, and manage passwords with ease. And best of all, PearPass is completely free. There are no subscriptions, no fees, and no data mining.
Powered by the Pear Stack
PearPass runs on Pear, a peer-to-peer framework for building applications that do not rely on centralized services.
- On desktop, PearPass is built with Pear Runtime.
- On mobile, it uses Expo with Bare Runtime, and Hypercore based data structures that guarantee full control to users.
Behind the scenes, PearPass is powered by autopass, a secure engine for encryption, storage, device pairing, and replication. Autopass is built on trusted primitives developed by Holepunch, including:
- Autobase for managing append only logs across peers
- HyperDB and Hyperbee for structured queries and views
- Blind Pairing for secure invites and device linking
- Hyperswarm for peer discovery and encrypted networking
Each vault runs its own local autopass instance. When you create or change a record, it is saved directly and securely replicated across paired devices. No third parties ever see or touch your data.
This architecture means:
- No servers and no external infrastructure
- End to end encrypted syncing
- Vaults that are always available, even when offline

Built for a Breach Era
More than seventeen hundred data breaches have already been reported in the United States this year, affecting over one hundred sixty million people. Nearly half of all internet users have had at least one password compromised.
Cloud infrastructure is not just vulnerable. It is being exploited every single day.
PearPass offers something stronger. A true zero trust foundation that keeps your credentials stored locally and synced securely using peer to peer networking. No cloud. No vault you do not own. No attack surface you cannot see.
You should not have to trust anyone with your identity. Not a platform. Not a provider. Just your own devices and the cryptography that protects them.
